The pattern of a firefly indicates the species. They use a different patterns so that they can recognize compatible mates. The females wait on the ground and blink back if they see a familiar pattern and they're interested. If you look at the bottom of teh photo, the dots that aren't moving are most likely the females responding from the ground.
